At Martha's Best we are continually experimenting with new varieties and systems with four goals in mind.
“Better” - Through tree selection, can we produce a fruit that is sweeter, more appealing in appearance and survives better the logistics we have to go through to get it to the market?
“Reduce” - Can we produce a quality papaya using fewer resources in terms of chemicals, fertilizers, fuel and packaging than we did the year before?
“It” - The environment. We are constantly looking at ways we can reduce our impact on “It” We have many trials on reducing the amount of irrigation water we use, changing field cultivation practices and reducing our fuel consumption through increased tractor efficiency’s. It is a never-ending process but each year we get better.
“Now” - There is no point doing R and D if we do not use it. Under our “Now” program we have inspired an attitude that allows us to change from “Good” to “Better” NOW!, reducing the change time to minutes instead of months.
Combined, our "Better Reduce It Now" program is moving us towards producing the ultimate papaya with less, a process we will all gain from. |
